Before I booked the flight, I waffled many times. What the hell was I doing? Going to NOLA on a whim, because a demon could get me in contact with some witches who might be able to help me? And leave Delia alone with the box and the killers in Portland?

I had to do this, though. If I didn’t, I would always wonder what would have happened. Would the witches be able to help me? Would I break the blood promise? Would I be a full (half) witch or just this thin shell for the rest of my life?

I felt bad about leaving Delia behind with the box, and Killian to deal with the murders and investigation by himself, but it would be only for a couple of days. They didn’t need me.

I was packing my bag when I heard the front door opening and closing. For a quick second, my heart stopped, but then I remembered who had my code and could easily enter—even without it.

Damn it.

“What are you doing?” Killian asked from my bedroom’s doorway.

I grabbed another one of my tees, folded it, and put it inside my bag on my bed. “Nothing.”

He took two large steps and stopped beside me. “That doesn’t look like nothing.”

I didn’t want to tell him. Why would I? But he wouldn’t stop nagging or leave me alone if I didn’t. I could lie, but what was the point? It wasn’t as if he could stop me. I mean, he probably could with his strength or compulsion, but why would he?

“I’m going to New Orleans.” I quickly told him what I had done since leaving Delia’s house and my plan. “My flight leaves in …” I checked the time on my phone. It was already past midnight. This was becoming a thing and I didn’t like it. "Five hours.” I had gotten a red-eye flight there and booked the flight back for two days later. Hopefully, that was long enough to find the witches and have them help me.

Killian crossed his arms, his brow furrowed. “I’m coming with you.”

“Hm.” I stared at him. “Why? How? You can’t compel a bank teller to give you more money, and I won’t lend you money for a plane ticket.”

One corner of his lips tugged up. “I don’t need money for that. I don’t even need a ticket.”

Compulsion. Right. He could compel people to let him on the flight.

“What about the box? You can’t stay away from it for too long.”

“Leave that to me.” He looked at my phone. “You said your flight is at five in the morning, right?”

“Right.”

“I’ll meet you at the airport at four.”

He dashed out of my apartment with his super speed, not even giving me a chance to rebuke or tell him I didn’t need a babysitter.

With a sigh, I resumed packing.
